Okay, the agent emailed, which I am happy about, as I was a wreck.
He wants another round of revisions, but this time after outlining what he wants to see, he closes with the line: “If this all sounds agreeable to you, then Iād like to offer you representation.”
omg omg!

What Megan said, below. š Congratulations on receiving an email with the potential offer of representation. Sorry to hear that the revision he wants is not a good one… This is an important step, regardless. I have faith in you!

That is wonderful news! Of a discrete moment in time from which we will not, of course, extrapolate in a manner insulting to any gods, demons, or assorted extraplanar beings who may be listening and/or inclined to retaliate.

ah ha ha exactly
I am actually getting a sinking feeling. I emailed the nice gentleman back asking for some clarification on the most major thing he wanted to see revised, he answered, and I’m…not sure I can do it. It’s a major structural change that would throw a lot of gears in the story out of whack.

…And now I read on down. :/ That’s tricky, but good luck deciding. I admire the way you take constructive criticism and apply it, so if your instincts are telling you a criticism is actually wrong, I’d be inclined to trust them…
If you decide you can’t make the change, would it be worth trying to explain to him why the story has to work that way?

I basically did this, but I don’t have high hopes for a favorable response. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna look like a prima donna author who’s unwilling to take criticism or edits, which is a flaw that appears to be both very common and very fatal in the publishing world.
And there are some other things that make me think this particular agent might not be right for me, actually. I’ll make a less-vague post once I see how the situation resolves.
I am seriously considering throwing the thing online as a 99 cent e-book at this stage. I’m already working on the next book, I’m sick to death of this one, the publishing market is in a tailspin, and I’ve been sending out queries for a year and a half now. Really ready just to be done with it.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I’m sorry the changes he wants you to make aren’t helpful, but it’s still an awfully nice vote of confidence, no matter what you decide to do.

I guess it’s an altimate struggle when the world doesn’t have the same beat as our heart. But who knows, anything can happen! Listen to your heart and keep on writing so there will be no regreat in the end. š
