What’s for Dinner

Plus: bonus baby picture!

Davy is a month old now (and growing cuter by the day), and Robin will be three on Thursday! We have some new Thomas toys squirreled away as presents for him, and I’m planning to bake a train cake that night, but our real celebration will be a picnic at Tilden Park over the weekend. We’re hoping that Robin’s Pappy and Nonna will be able to join us!

Our veggie box on Saturday brought us cherry tomatoes, two pints of strawberries, two little boxes of raspberries, four odd tart fruits that might be pluots, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, kale, basil, and four zucchinis. We had pesto on Sunday and a roast chicken with sauteed zucchini last night. Tonight Sam is going to be eating at the Splunk conference, so I figured Robin and I would just have hummus and pita bread for dinner. I meant to make some tabouleh too, but I don’t have any bulgur, so I’ll have to do that as a lunch instead later in the week. Also, as long as they keep sending me kale I’m going to keep putting it into bulgur salad.

Wednesday night I’m making stuffed peppers, along with a salad to use the carrots and broccoli. Thursday Robin gets a birthday dinner of “noodles,” his favorite—he likes all kinds of noodles, but specifically I’m making baked whole wheat penne with cheese, cauliflower and ham (this recipe with cauliflower instead of peas). Then Friday will be for leftovers. And I’ll trust the fruit to take care of itself.

Seriously, that is one cute baby, and now that I’ve read the whole post I’m very happy that “what’s for dinner” is not the photograph caption.

    Lovely lovely picture!

How are you doing with the new box? What are the main differences with the Farm Fresh to You box?

I think you were doing Capay Valley before.

I usually do the FFTY More Mixed which means organic stuff from everywhere (ah hum, even Mexico). These days I consider my box more a way of shopping then a true CSA so I’m pretty much ok with it- and especially ok with it after another chaotic trip to the Mountain View Sunday Farmers Market (way too big and crowded for my tastes!).

However, sometimes when I read another one of the ambitious Farm Fresh to You campaigns and see produce from what I consider very far away I think about switching. I just haven’t yet found another delivery service that delivers Wednesday or earlier in the week.

For me delivery timing and, these days, the ability to customize box size are very important. Still, the way I use the box (and the FFTY business model) means I could just as well use some organic delivery service.

Oh, congratulations on raising a son that eats a variety of food!

Farm Fresh to You does offer a “local only” option, which is what we were doing before. But yeah, we like the J&P Organics box a lot. For one thing, it’s only $20 where the Capay/FFTY box was $31.50 a week. The contents are similar though it seems like the J&P box is tilted more heavily towards fruit, which is fine by us.

Oh and also we have to go pick up our box on Saturday mornings rather than having it delivered. That’s not be a big hassle now that we have a car…

Robin isn’t too picky, but he doesn’t necessarily eat everything I cook. He’s not big on salads, for instance. My position is that I never force him to eat anything, but I also don’t allow substitutions. In other words, he doesn’t have to eat his vegetables but he’s not going to get a peanut butter sandwich instead…

What a great picture. We have some good ones from the trip and hope to get them out on Facebook soon. Pops and I were looking through pictures of Robin as a baby
and those photos look a lot like the ones of Davy–two cute ones.

The train cake sounds fun. He will love it. You might not get to eat it though. Love to all, Mo
