Tummy Troubles

Right, so, this here blog is supposed to be about pregnancy stuff. Woo! I’m pregnant!

I’m about seven weeks along, or nine weeks the way the doctor counts it: seven weeks from when I think conception occurred, nine weeks from my last period. I’ve only thrown up twice, but I’m sick to my stomach pretty much all the time. One of the times I hurled was on a public sidewalk, into some bushes. That was embarrassing. I felt like calling out to passers-by: “Don’t worry! It’s not catching!”

I haven’t gained any weight yet, actually lost a few pounds because of the constant nausea. Counterintuitively, it seems to be true that the thing to do when I feel really sick is to eat something. The nausea is definitely worst on an empty stomach. The best snacky food I’ve found so far is Breton whole wheat crackers. I tried buying ginger ale and ice cream, as those are foods I associate with sickness, but I only drank a little of the ginger ale and the ice cream bar is still in the fridge. It just doesn’t seem to appeal right now. What are you thinking, Baby?? Ice cream is delicious!

Baby doesn’t want pickles either, but there was some fresh pinapple at the grocery store that looked pretty good, so I brought it home. Maybe I’ll bust that out now.

Morning sickness is a fascinating thing, no one knows what causes it or what function it serves. I hear almonds and tomatoes sit well with many women. For several weeks during her pregnancy my sister ate little else. Also, she couldn’t so much as smell a cup of coffee without experiencing physical revulsion.

My mom says I should eat quinoa, as it is apparently the gods’ perfect food. I bought a pack of the stuff from Trader Joe’s but haven’t cooked it up yet. Maybe I’ll try it with almonds and tomatoes!

I tend to think that it doesn’t serve any function and that, like sore breasts, it’s a byproduct of the major construction going on elsewhere.

OTOH, maybe I’m wrong and it’s evolutionarily designed to make mothers-to-be real comfortable with vomit.

Hi Shannon. I totally comment-spam your blog, see if I don’t.

Also, I think it’s weird the way they ret-con you into having been pregnant two weeks before you actually were. Like, those two weeks, you were destined to be pregnant so we’re all going to pretend that you actually were pregnant.

    Very odd!

Hi Nina! Yes, it is odd, especially since I’m a lot more certain of my date of ovulation than I am of the day of my last period…

Yay! I found your preggo blog! So sorry you’re feeling sick. In my first trimester, I found that lemonade was one of the few things I wanted to drink. Tomatoes were good too. Maybe it’s the acid?

I have totally been guzzling lemonade! Limeade is even better.
