{"id":1073,"date":"2010-07-02T20:14:51","date_gmt":"2010-07-03T03:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shannon.users.sonic.net\/blog\/?p=1073"},"modified":"2010-07-02T20:15:13","modified_gmt":"2010-07-03T03:15:13","slug":"also-that-other-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/shannon.users.sonic.net\/blog\/?p=1073","title":{"rendered":"Also, That Other Thing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another thing making us uncomfortable right now is that a verdict is expected soon in the trial of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BART_Police_shooting_of_Oscar_Grant\">Johannes Mehserle<\/a>, and it&#8217;s pretty much assumed that there will be riots in Oakland if he&#8217;s acquitted. And specifically the violence may well center around Fruitvale&#8212;as I mentioned before, our house is on the border of that neighborhood. So, we&#8217;re a bit tense.<\/p>\n<p>The police are <a href=\"http:\/\/oaklandlocal.com\/blogs\/2010\/07\/message-councilmember-de-la-fuente-preparing-verdict-mehserle-trial\">bracing for riots<\/a>. So are <a href=\"http:\/\/oaklandlocal.com\/article\/calm-storm-days-verdict-oakland-quiet\">the local shopkeepers<\/a>. I don&#8217;t want to freak anyone out (Mom, don&#8217;t freak out) by mentioning this; I just thought it would be worse if the riots actually do happen and you hear about it on the news or something first. It&#8217;s extremely unlikely that we would be affected by any violence, anyway: the BART station where protests will be centered is a mile and a half from our house, and most of those blocks are quiet residential ones.
